Nine
L AURA LOOKED ATthe pictures in the album for a long time. There was nobody else she recognized. She wondered what had happened to all of the girls. Were they dead? The thought made her shiver. Peter might be weird and a kidnapper, but surely he wouldnât kill her. But why were there so many girls? She opened the album and counted all of the different faces. There were ten. There were exactly eight dresses, two pairs of jeans and ten pairs of shoes. If ten girls had lived in the house, where were they now! She had more questions than answers. She decided that she had better put the album back where she found it in case Peter came home unexpectedly and caught her with it. She didnât want to do anything to upset him so she also decided that she should wash up the breakfast dishes and clean the house like he had told her before he left.
It took less than twenty minutes to clean the dishes and another half an hour to vacuum and dust. She had never done that sort of thing before. Margaret and Tracey looked after those duties in her house. After she had finished she remembered that the window in kitchen was dirty and she rummaged until she found a glass cleaner and some paper towels. The window had not been cleaned in a long time and she had to go over it several times until she was satisfied that it was clean.
When she was busy she didnât think about her situation so much and decided that she would clean the other windows in the house. She moved her cleaning supplies to the living room and placed them on the coffee table. She then walked to the window on the left and pulled across the drapes. There was a glass covering fixed to the window just like the others and it was filthy too. As she squirted the cleaning liquid on it and began wiping off the dirt she looked through it. Suddenly she dropped the bottle of cleaning liquid and the paper towel and shrieked in shock.
Laura couldnât believe her eyes. Her hands dropped lifelessly to her sides. Her lower lip released and after several feeble attempts she managed to speak.
âSo thatâs what youâve done with the girls,â she said out loud. âOh my God.â Laura moved closer to the window and looked out. She had the very strong urge to cover her eyes and to run to her room but she was frozen in place. There were big lights fixed to the walls of the outside house and they were spaced about twenty feet apart. They were all on and were very bright. Separating the inside of the new house from the outside of the old house was an area she guessed to be about ten feet in width. It was covered with grass and needed mowing. Facing her just outside the window was a large piece of wood nearly four feet high and two feet wide.
